A colorful bird to brighten up. That is what Wim Schingenga (1933) envisioned when he started working with Perspex or Plexiglas. Often he starts with an idea, that idea becomes a scribble. Precisely small things can inspire. The scribble becomes a brief sketch. Most of it arises during the making.
All his life Wim Schingenga has been drawing and painting, and he is at home in so many techniques. The versatility sometimes makes the choice difficult. In addition to the three-dimensional objects in perspex, the artist shows drawings, lino prints, oil paintings and watercolors in this exhibition. Both figurative and slightly surrealistic and somewhat erotic.
Willem Schingenga was born on November 28, 1933 in Amsterdam. He studies at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs, which was the forerunner of the Rietveld Academy. In 1955 Wim starts working as a graphic artist/designer at printing company Flach in Sneek. He also got his drawing certificate and worked from 1962 to 1994 as a drawing teacher at the Bogerman College in Sneek. Nowadays Wim Schingenga is a volunteer in the printing department of the museum and co-designer/printer of a number of copper prints.
Wim likes to express something light-hearted with his paintings and objects, often with a joke. In his own words, the work must remain captivating, then it succeeds for him. One of his latest perspex works is the Corona bird. A colorfully executed bird with a virus-like creature in its beak that it attacks like a worm.
